In 2021, during the 58th Festival di Nuova Consonanza in Rome, Palermo-born composer Virginia Guastella premiered Angelica Cunta, a monodrama for mezzo-soprano and ensemble. The work, inspired by Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso and the Story of the Paladins of France, reinterprets Angelica’s role, transforming her from a coveted object to the narrator of her own tale.
Directed by Cristian Taraborrelli, the staging featured mezzo-soprano Chiara Osella and performer Bryan Da Ros, with video projections by Fabio Massimo Iaquone and costumes by Angela Buscemi. The event took place at La Pelanda, part of Rome’s Mattatoio complex.
This production served as an homage to the Sicilian puppet theater and the composer’s hometown of Palermo, blending elements of tradition with a contemporary vision.
